Catherine

The Life List

Catherine is Brett Bohlinger’s sister-in-law, a close member of the Bohlinger family whose role combines business influence with intimate family care. She is not present at every turning point, but when she does appear, she helps define who belongs to the family and how its members make room for one another. Her authority over a consequential employment question and her tenderness toward Brett’s baby give her story both practical and emotional weight.

Identity and Family Position

Catherine is married to Joad, Brett’s brother, and is part of the family Brett turns to during periods of uncertainty. Her place in the family is especially clear when Brett investigates her biological father. Joad worries that a late-arriving daughter could disrupt a father’s established household; Catherine articulates what he means, distinguishing the family John already lives with from the new relationship Brett hopes to form. Her comment does not deny Brett’s claim to family. Instead, it gives shape to the awkwardness of joining a life that has been built without her.

That distinction comes as Brett absorbs the possibility that her biological father may not want to meet her. Catherine’s intervention is therefore both explanatory and painful: it makes the existing family’s perspective legible, even as Brett fears she will be regarded as an intrusion. Catherine’s presence in this exchange places her among the relatives helping Brett confront the emotional consequences of a search whose answer cannot guarantee welcome.

Business Judgment and Family Tension

Catherine also has a say in decisions at Bohlinger Cosmetics. During a Thanksgiving journey, Brett’s partner presses her about whether she has spoken to Catherine regarding a possible position for him at the company. Brett explains that her mother had disliked the idea and that, ultimately, the decision belongs to Catherine. This makes Catherine more than a relative who happens to be connected to the business: Brett treats her as the person whose judgment will determine whether the proposal can proceed.

The question unsettles Brett because agreeing could ease the tension with her partner, but would mean using her influence to advance his ambitions. Catherine is away in London with Joad on a business trip, so she is not available to settle the matter in that moment. The episode reveals how family loyalties and company decisions overlap in Brett’s life, while leaving Catherine’s eventual decision unstated. Her significance here lies in the responsibility Brett recognizes her as holding, not in an outcome the narrative does not provide.

Kinship During Brett’s Search

After a family gathering at Elizabeth Bohlinger’s house, Joad asks Brett how much longer she intends to stay there. Catherine has already gone outside at his request, leaving him and Brett alone for the conversation. The brief arrangement underscores the contrast between Brett’s uncertain housing and the settled domestic lives of her siblings; Catherine is part of the household world from which Brett is trying to understand her own changing place in the family.

Later, when Joad visits Brett outside the neonatal intensive care unit, he says Catherine is delighted by the photographs Brett has sent of Austin Elizabeth. Though Catherine is not at the hospital in that scene, her response connects the new baby to the wider family. The photographs carry news across the distance, and Catherine’s excitement shows that Brett’s changing life is being followed and welcomed by relatives who are not physically beside her.

Welcoming Austin Elizabeth

At the birthday gathering Brett holds for her late mother, Catherine cradles Austin Elizabeth while the family assembles around Elizabeth Bohlinger’s table. Joad suggests that Catherine put the baby down so everyone can eat, but Catherine refuses to do so. The gesture is small and domestic, yet it gives the baby an immediate place in the family gathering: Catherine keeps holding her rather than treating her as an interruption to the meal.

Brett catches Catherine’s eye, and the two share a smile grounded in their common love for the child. By this point, Brett’s family life has expanded beyond the household she grew up in: she has reunited with her father and half-sister, and has become Austin’s mother. Catherine’s embrace of Austin makes that change tangible. Across her appearances, Catherine helps negotiate the boundaries of family—first by naming the complicated reality Brett faces in seeking her father, and finally by offering an unambiguous, affectionate welcome to Brett’s daughter.
